...and how could this mean anything to me?

by blindsider,  Nov 1, 2006
Pros: Captivating, dark, progressive... Maynard James Keenan's voice is something you'll have to hear to believe
Cons: Those looking for catchy songs about sunshine won't find it here
The Bottom Line: Swift changes in pace, excellent vocals, dark, angry, melodic, heavy... yeah, this is the stuff.

On the importance of learning to swim and...PRYING OPEN MY THIRD EYE

by pyfr,  Dec 30, 2007
Pros: Philosophy, spirituality, humor, anger, power chords, and crazy time changes- all playing nicely together.
Cons: Everything they've done since this album seems to pale in comparison.
The Bottom Line: Takes the principles of 70's prog and 80's metal, then fashions them into something new and cutting-edge. One of the heaviest yet deepest rock albums of the past twenty years.

by punkrawka, top reviewer in Music ,  Apr 22, 2003
Pros: A cohesive, organic, intelligent album with musical and lyrical depth
Cons: It's dark as hell, challenging, and not readily accessible
The Bottom Line: Unquestionably a hallmark album of 1990s hard rock, with buckets of listening potential.

What became of subtlety?

by salivation,  May 30, 2005
Pros: Calling it a thought provoking and cerebral masterpiece doesn't do it justice.
Cons: You can't have sex with sound waves.
The Bottom Line: Aenima is as challenging as it is rewarding as it is vulgar and silly. In other words, my all-time favorite album.
