Pros: the best novel, fantasy or not, ever written
Cons: very long
The Bottom Line: Quite simply, my favorite book in the world. There is nothing like it...it's pure magic. Enter Middle Earth, and leave forever changed.

Pros: This is the masterpiece that opened up the world to fantasy
Cons: If not used to lengthy books, in for a long haul; singing occasionally annoyed me.
The Bottom Line: If youre into fantasy then you should read this because Lord of the Rings is the father and mother of fantasy.

Pros: Sui generis; numinous and uplifting
Cons: Far too many of the wrong people like it for the wrong reasons. Sigh....
The Bottom Line: Densely layered, textured, deeply realized: a world of its own, and implicating eternal verities and virtues. A triumph, a beacon, and an indispensable work

Pros: Only the fact that this is as good as fiction is ever going to get...probably.
Cons: Well...I do know someone who complained about the length..sheesh.
The Bottom Line: A brilliant piece of literature; the height of fantasy fiction.

Pros: Great story, great action, magic, elves...
Cons: None for me, but it may be too slow for some
The Bottom Line: One of the best books I've read in my life -- loaded with action, philosophy, magic, mythology... and it's easy to read.

Pros: makes you relive your childhood where everything is possible
Cons: Too many details that you somtimes get lost in them, a bit too long
The Bottom Line: Buy this book, not only because of the story itself, is has become much more than a story
