Pros: the songwriting, lyricism, the strong instrumental work from all members
Cons: yeah, right
The Bottom Line: Ride the Lightning is the first in a whole series of five star albums from Metallica's early days. A metalhead must.

Pros: Powerful, exhilarating, hilarious songs about death and other things like death.
Cons: I missed out on it when I was a socially frustrated teenager.
The Bottom Line: In which the author becomes all the guys who wanted to beat him up after gym class.

Pros: Amazing songwriting and lyricism, with many important things to say
Cons: Too thrashy for some
The Bottom Line: This is one of Metallica's seminal albums, whose first three tracks should especially not be missed.

Pros: Heavy as hell but with slower experimentation; excellent lyrics
Cons: Still a bit unpolished, though I like the raw sound
The Bottom Line: Ktulu is calling.

Pros: A near-perfect blend of power and melody, speed and mood. Their best, by far.
Cons: Set too high of a standard. And launched a million worthless imitators.
The Bottom Line: My nomination for "Best Metal Album of the 80's". Redefined the way that headbanger bands did business. More of a power metal than thrash affair.

Pros: Thrashy, far more mature and complex than Kill 'Em All, multiple classics
Cons: Under 50 minutes, but let's not get greedy here
The Bottom Line: Just buy it.
